Apple is reducing the display bezels of devices by hiding control circuitry
"Optical system and method for realizing zero-frame display" is a patent application recently exposed by Apple. In it, Apple continues to research ways to shrink the bezels of iPhone and Mac displays. There's a reason we don't have true bezel-to-bezel displays on devices from the Apple Watch to the Mac. While different display technologies can achieve bezels of different sizes, they all still require control circuitry or sensors to be placed around the screen.
Apple states in the patent that electronic displays typically include a bezel surrounding the display that can be exploited to hide the driver circuitry used to operate the display, however, the use of such a bezel reduces the overall visible space of the image. Apple came up with two ideas to reduce the bezels.
First, the bezel or bezel area can be covered by passive parts of the display. It might not respond to touch or have all the functionality of the main display, but a "light pipe" can route part of the image to this area. The function of the light pipe may be to transmit or distribute light from the pixel array to, for example, the drive circuit area to create a perceived active area.
Second, the pixels in this area can be spaced farther apart than the rest of the display. This would allow the display pixels to not obscure what Apple says is the driving circuitry. In this way, the pixel pitch (ie the distance between pixels) of the border area is increased relative to the pixel pitch of the pixels of the active area. That is, red, green and blue pixels are interspersed between drive circuit elements.
